The U.S. Mint first released American Eagle Gold Bullion coins in 1986, resuming production of bullion for the first time since it ceased during President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal in 1933. Envisioned as a way to make collection and storage of precious metals easier while also stimulating the American mining industry, the coins were released in four sizes and denominations; 1 oz ($50), ½ oz ($25), ¼ oz ($10), and 1/10 oz ($5). As the only modern gold bullion coin to be authorized by the U.S. government, American Eagle coins are guaranteed for their weight, content, and purity by the U.S. Mint. In accordance with the act that allowed for their creation, all gold contained in these coins is sourced from mines located in the United States.
