Precious metals have long been a staple of wise investment portfolios, due to their nature as a hedge against market volatility. In recognition of this, the US Congress in 1985 sought to make their acquisition easier while also stimulating a flagging mining industry by passing the Gold Bullion Coin Act. Now, the United States Mint’s American Eagle Coin Program releases new collectible, easily tradable, locally sourced fine gold coins, also known as bullions, in 1/10 oz ($5), ¼ oz ($10), ½ oz ($25), and 1 oz ($50) denominations every year. Operating continuously since 1986, this program’s coins are now synonymous with quality and demand. Known for easy liquidation, investors and collectors alike prize these coins not only for their value to any balanced precious metals investment portfolio, but also for their gorgeous design that celebrates the patriotic icons of Lady Liberty and the American Bald Eagle.
This coin takes inspiration dating all the way back to 1907, with its obverse side faithfully depicting Lady Liberty using a design based on sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens relief for the 1907 $20 Gold Double Eagle coin. Personally commissioned by President Theodore Roosevelt and widely considered to be beautiful in its day, production of this coin ceased in 1933 as part of the New Deal, but its spirit lives on today in the $50 Gold American Eagle coin. In her modern incarnation, Liberty’s status as a symbol of enlightenment and peace is on full display, as she stands full figure holding a flaming torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. She is joined by the moniker “Liberty” engraved across the top of the coin and the mintage year to her right. The coin’s reverse also features the American Bald Eagle after which the coin is named carrying an olive branch to its family, as envisioned for President Ronald Reagan in 1986 by sculptor Miley Busiek, along with its denomination and weight markers.
